RMI Independent Petrol Retailers Association - 2010 Budget Response

Monday, March 29th, 2010

The Chancellor failed to mention that, in addition to the 1.0 ppl duty increase from 1 April, he has already taken measures to claw back a duty incentive provided to the refiners for biofuels production. This latter measure will result in an increase to the cost of product by up to 1.0 ppl also from 1 April.

Thus the real increase to the motorist at the pump will be 2.0 ppl plus the VAT multiplier equating to around 2.35 ppl – some 135% more than might have been perceived from his speech to the House.

This size of increase does not sit well with his promise that “this is a Budget to secure recovery…” especially with further duty increases now advised for 1 October 2010 and 1 January 2011.

GM Recalls 5,000 Heavy Duty Vans for Engine Fire Risk

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

General Motors Co. is conducting a safety recall of about 5,000 heavy-duty Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana passenger and cargo vans and halting production and sale of the trucks until a fix for a suspected faulty alternator can be determined.

Retail and fleet customers who purchased these vans, which were built in February and March this year, are being urged to stop driving the vans, park them outside away from buildings and other vehicles and, if possible, disconnect both battery cables.

Vehicles affected by the recall and stop sale fall in these ranges of Vehicle Identification Numbers (last eight digits shown):

Year Division Model From Through
2010 Chevrolet Express
2500/3500
A1129327 A1142523
2010 GMC Savana
2500/3500
A1128784 A1901915
Relatively few of the affected vans are in retail customer possession. About 1,300 are in rental and other fleets, and a Stop Sale order was issued Friday, preventing the fleet-owned vans from being rented or those on dealer lots from being sold. Others are being held at dealerships or in ports before being exported.
Only the 2500 (three-quarter ton) and 3500 (one-ton) Series vans are affected. Light-duty (half-ton) Express and Savana vans use a different alternator. The light-duty vans are still being built and shipped from the plant in Wentzville, Mo. Typical production at the plant is about 60 percent heavy-duty models.
“The Stop Sale and production halt are measures being taken to assure customer safety until we have a repair procedure,” said Jeff Boyer, GM executive director of Safety and Interiors.

Ktm Takes Motorcycles On Road With New Hino

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

An emerging motorcycle brand has commissioned a new Hino 500 truck as part of its road-bike marketing strategy.

Perth-based KTM Australia will use the six-tonne payload X Long wheelbase Hino FD 1027 Air to display on-road and off-road machines to its national network of 60 dealers.

The new Hino truck has airbag rear suspension and a purpose-designed body finished in KTM orange and black livery.

KTM Australian general manager Jeff Leisk said the new FD 1027 Air is the company’s first Hino.

“We knew Hino’s reputation for performance and reliability, and the airbag suspension is important with the machines we’re carrying,” he said.

“The marketing strategy for road bikes is to display the machines – as well as the off-road bikes – to our dealers, and to support our new Superbike racing program with Shannon Johnson competing in the Australian Superbike Championship.”

KTM, based in Austria, has traditionally been strong in off-road machines but has a growing presence in the road-bike market.

Jeff Leisk was the first Australian rider to win a world motocross Grand Prix and was runner-up in the 1989 world 500 motocross championship.

The Hino FD 1027 Air is offered with the choice of two wheelbase – Long (4850mm) and X Long (5500mm).
Both have a GVM of 10,400kg and a 7.7-litre Hino turbocharged and intercooled direct-injection engine that delivers 190kW of power at 2500rpm and 794Nm of torque at 1500rpm.
It is matched to a six-speed synchromesh overdrive Hino transmission.

Standard equipment includes ABS anti-lock brakes, cruise control, Hino Easy Start - Take-off Assist and airbag rear suspension.

World premier of the rugged Volvo FMX construction truck at Bauma exhibition

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Volvo Trucks announces that the company will be introducing an important new truck at Bauma – the Volvo FMX. It is developed specifically for heavy tasks within the construction segment.

“This is a great truck, and I’m very proud of it. The new Volvo FMX really puts us - and our customers - in pole position,” says Staffan Jufors, President and CEO at Volvo Trucks.

Towards further specialisation
Volvo Trucks has been producing construction trucks since 1928. Today, however, the Volvo FMX marks a new construction phase towards further specialisation. This has resulted in a separation of the highly successful FM range into two dedicated parts: construction and distribution.

“Customers are asking for increased specialisation and we are listening to them,” says Staffan Jufors. “The purpose-engineered Volvo FMX is the proof - a truck that truly reflects its capabilities, inside and out. It breathes construction.”

Growing focus on construction
The Volvo FMX is the latest contribution to Volvo Trucks’ aggressive product strategy - the most challenging product plan in the history of the company. The coming launch sends a powerful signal that Volvo is increasing its focus within the construction business.

“We already have great success with our current Volvo FM model, particularly in Russia, Eastern Europe and the Nordic markets. With the new specialised Volvo FMX, we see a huge potential to increase marketshares even further - on all markets,” says Staffan Jufors.

Press Conference at Bauma
The world premier and official press conference for the Volvo FMX will be held at CET 11.00, April 19, Volvo stand in hall C4, Bauma exhibition.

Volvo trucks in multiple field testing of diesel technology for alternative fuels

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

At the Energitinget energy symposium in Stockholm on 16-17 March, Volvo Trucks presented several solutions showing that the company is a leader in alternative fuels for trucks performing both long-haul and local operations. These solutions could play a key role in helping Sweden and EU achieve their target of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2020.

“We will soon initiate field testing of both methane diesel technology and bio-DME technology,” revealed Lennart Pilskog, Volvo Trucks’ Director of Public Affairs, at the Energitinget symposium. “This is a continuation of Volvo Trucks’ 2007 initiative, when the company presented drivable trucks for seven different alternative fuels.”

Bio-DME trucks to be tested this autumn
Energitinget 2010 was the twelfth Energitinget symposium, and attracted around 2,300 visitors. At the symposium, five speakers from Volvo Trucks discussed energy efficiency, logistics and fuel development. Volvo Trucks also spoke about one of its focus areas in alternative fuels: Bio-DME, which produces 95% lower CO2 emissions than diesel. In September 2010, field testing will start using the first FH trucks with 13-litre engines. The company also announced which customers will participate in the field tests.

“It has just been finalised that six haulage companies in four locations will drive the trucks daily in both long-haul and local operations,” said Per Salomonsson, DME project manager at Volvo. “These hauliers are DHL, Posten Logistik, Green Cargo, Bröderna Lindqvist Åkeri, J-Trans and Ragn-Sells. The field tests will be evaluated in 2012. After that, we will decide how to proceed.”

Methane diesel soon to be commercialised
Volvo Trucks is also at the forefront in developing methane diesel technology. According to Pilskog, this technology offers an extremely attractive combination of lower CO2 emissions, high energy efficiency, excellent drivability and reduced maintenance costs.

Field tests of methane diesel technology for gas operation will soon start in collaboration with eight Swedish haulage companies, which will use diesel and methane gas (CNG) in Volvo FL and Volvo FE trucks with 7-litre engines.

Methane diesel technology also suitable for long-haul operations
The next step is a new solution presented at Energitinget: diesel combined with liquid methane gas (LNG). The solution will be field-tested in UK and Sweden on Volvo FM trucks with 13-litre engines.

“Methane gas combined with diesel in a diesel enginge offers twice the operational range of a traditional spark ignition gas engine. Liquid methane gas offers four times the operational range of the gas trucks typically used today, making the technology highly attractive for long-haul operations,” explains Pilskog. “What’s more, if the gas filling stations are too far apart, the truck can continue running on only diesel. This technology could play a key role in helping Sweden achieve its target of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2020.”

“We’ve taken several important steps towards commercialising the technology, and plan to start selling trucks powered by methane gas and diesel in 2011. We’ll start with a limited number of trucks with a view to increasing the volumes in 2012.”

Collaboration gets results
“The important thing for us is to achieve results, and this is best done by collaborating with other players,” explains Lars Mårtensson, Environmental Director, Volvo Trucks. “We maintain active dialogue with fuel producers and distributors, transport and logistics companies, authorities and research institutions, and are open to further collaborations.”

One concrete example is the project Klimatneutrala godstransporter på väg (Climate Neutral Road Haulage), a collaboration between authorities, universities, manufacturers and the transport industry. This network has provided the basis for several joint projects between the participants, including field testing of the new fuels.

“Chemrec will establish a production facility in Piteå, Sweden, in preparation for the Bio-DME tests, and Preem will build filling stations in Stockholm, Göteborg, Jönköping and Piteå. In the methane diesel field tests, AGA, Eon and Fordonsgas will be responsible for establishing the filling stations for liquid methane gas. Customers looking to reduce their CO2 emissions will actively participate in the tests, and authorities will work on establishing regulations,” explains Pilskog.
