Earth Tech Puts Kenworth T470s To Work to Shore Up Sinkholes

Monday, May 31st, 2010

LAND O’ LAKES, Fla.,– The last thing any homeowner wants to do is need Earth Tech. But if they do, they will be glad they called.Earth Tech is the leading soil stabilization firm in Florida, where much of the state has sandy soils laying on top of porous limestone. “Think of Swiss cheese,” said Ron Broadrick, CEO of the Land O’ Lakes, Fla.-based company, which he founded with his father, Lewis, in 1991. “That’s what limestone can eventually look like. Over time, mildly acidic water develops passageways and cavities in limestone allowing soil particles to flow with water, causing sinkhole conditions.”

When a homeowner or business notices settling and cracking in their structure, or sees sinkholes developing, a call is made to a geo-technical engineer who investigates and uses imaging equipment to analyze the problem. “More often than not, it’s a limestone problem and we get called in to stabilize the bedrock.”

Using a fleet of 20 trucks, including nine new Kenworth T470s equipped with 10-1/2- yard McNeilus mixers, Earth Tech uses a special grout formula from its own batch plant that is pumped into the bedrock. “For a typical house, we’ll drill 25 to 30 holes around the house at various angles, installing a steel casing down to rock on average 80 feet to hit the limestone. We then begin pumping in the grout to seal the top of the limestone as the steel casing is withdrawn. The process repeats itself in each hole until the sinkhole condition is stabilized.”

According to Broadrick, Earth Tech has stabilized more than 3,000 job sites – big and small. “We continue to grow, much in part thanks to our quality reputation. I’m actively involved in each aspect of business, as is my father. And we have a customer care representative working with each of our clients to ensure projects go smoothly. But we not only talk the talk, we showcase quality in every aspect of our business. Our feeling is that if you invest in the best people and the most innovative equipment, you can assure your customers of top performance and on-time delivery. Our new Kenworth T470s help us fulfill our goals.”

Working with Rick Ward of Kenworth of Central Florida, the Kenworth T470 was recommended due to the flat terrain and job requirements for the vehicle. “We spec’d the T470s with a Cummins ISL engine rated at 365 hp with 1,250 ft-lbs of torque and 5.38 gear ratio. Allison automatics complete the package. With these specs, Earth Tech has the pulling power and the gradeability to haul 10 yards of grout. The Kenworth T470 was the perfect fit for their application,” said Ward.

The T470 has a gross vehicle rating (GVW) ranging from a heavy Class 7 vehicle at 33,000 lbs. up to a light Class 8 truck at 68,000 lbs. The vehicle offers full parent rail extensions, delivering maximum resistance to bending moment (RBM) from one end of the rail to the other. Front axles are rated from 12,000 to 22,000 lbs., single rear axles from 21,000 to 26,000 lbs., and tandem rear axles from 40,000 to 46,000 lbs. A full range of manual and automatic transmissions are offered.

“Rick and Kenworth of Central Florida did a great job of working with us to come up with the right truck for our operation,” said Broadrick. “We’re specialists in soil stabilization – not so much in truck technology. They took the time to understand our business and they realize how valuable vehicle reliability and dealer support is to our business. We have set schedules with our customers and specialized equipment, so we need to be able to trust the dealership and its service department with our business. And we do.”

Kenworth’s quality products, combined with excellent dealer support from dealers such as Kenworth of Central Florida, contributed to Kenworth receiving the 2009 J.D. Power and Associates award for “Highest in Customer Satisfaction for Heavy Duty Dealer Service.”* In operation since February, the T470s are getting grins of satisfaction from Earth Tech drivers. “They love ’em,” said Broadrick. “Who wouldn’t?”

Kenworth Sales Opens Parts and Service Facility in Heyburn, Idaho

Monday, May 31st, 2010

HEYBURN, Idaho, – Kenworth Sales Company has opened a parts and service facility in Heyburn, Idaho.
A member of the Kenworth dealer network of more than 300 locations in the United States and Canada, Kenworth Sales – Heyburn is a 13,800 square-foot facility on 2-3/4 acres located about a mile southwest from Exit 211 on U.S. Interstate 84.

The dealership’s 9,000 square-foot service department has eight bays and offers Kenworth PremierCare® ExpressLube and Air Conditioning service. The well-stocked parts department has more than 2,300 square feet of parts storage. The service department has two PACCAR MX engine certified technicians and two Cummins certified heavy duty engine technicians on staff.

“Since the nearest dealership is 50 miles away, Kenworth Sales – Heyburn gives local companies and owner-operators a much more convenient way to get expert service and parts for their trucks. This is very important in this challenging economy,” said Les Anderson, branch manager. “We’re especially offering expertise and service to other agribusiness companies and haulers in this area.” Before recently becoming a Kenworth dealership, the facility was operated for 10 years as a dedicated service facility for the J.R. Simplot Company.

Kenworth Sales – Heyburn is offering full-time parts delivery service five days a week and a remote full-service truck to provide 24-hour roadside assistance, according to Anderson. In addition to its Heyburn location, Kenworth Sales Company also operates 19 dealerships in Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Kenworth Sales – Heyburn is located at 1381 O St. The facility is open from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The phone number is 208-678-3039. Key personnel include Anderson and Tom Thomas, service manager.

The new facility is part of Kenworth’s constant commitment for superior service coverage as exemplified by Kenworth and its dealer network receiving the 2009 J.D. Power and Associates award for “Highest in Customer Satisfaction for Heavy Duty Dealer Service”

Kenworth T800s Help Keep Saskatchewan Growing in the Summer, Warm in the Winter

Monday, May 31st, 2010

PORCUPINE PLAIN, Sask., – For Vern Armitage, when daffodils and tulips begin to bloom in the spring, it marks a seasonal change for his business. It means the growing season is here for farmers in Saskatchewan and that means they need fertilizer.

And, that means the phone begins to ring for Porcupine Plain-based Wheelers Transport, which operates a fleet of 25 Kenworth T800s with 60- and 72-inch AeroCab® FlatTop sleepers. The company hauls pressure vessels in Super-B train configurations and delivers 34-metric tons of anhydrous ammonia in each load. The low-cost form of nitrogen fertilizer is delivered to retail locations to service farmers throughout the province, beginning in April and running through the end of May. Deliveries begin again in the fall months until the first freeze sets in.

“Each driver will typically make two or three runs from the plant per day,” said Armitage, founder and president of Wheelers Transport. “We also have seven grain trailers that are used year-round, and for the harvest. So, we stay very busy.”

Augmenting its fertilizer hauling business is the company’s main stay – delivering propane to retail stores through Saskatchewan and into upper Manitoba. “When it comes to winter weather in Saskatchewan, the colder the better,” said Armitage with a laugh. “I’m probably one of the only guys around who smiles when the temperature begins to drop. The average winter temperature is cold here (Saskatoon’s average high temperature in January is minus 13 degrees Celsius, or 9 degrees Fahrenheit.). But the colder it gets, the more demand there is for propane, and the number of our deliveries go up. We haul 17,000 gallons of propane per load.

It’s why the type of trucks we operate is so important. When you’re hauling the kind of weight we’re hauling, and running B-Trains with $350,000 worth of trailers, we simply can’t afford downtime. Our trucks have to be reliable and our Kenworths have proven their worth to us over the years.”

A former driver himself, Armitage’s first truck was a Kenworth K100 cabover back in 1974. “It was a great truck, but the old boys I ran around with told me I didn’t need power steering,” he said with a laugh. “So I ordered it without – I probably had the biggest forearms in the trucking industry.”

Today’s trucks are a bit more comfortable. “Absolutely,” said Armitage, who still drives on occasion. “And turning is a breeze. We really like the turning radius of the Kenworth T800s, which is important when making deliveries with B-Trains. And, the layout and comfort of the cab is great. It’s really a solid workhorse truck and our drivers appreciate what they get to drive.

“What’s also important to us is dealer support. We’ve been working with Custom Truck Sales for a long time,” Armitage said. “Over the years they’ve been great to work with and the service department really knows and understands our business. Again, we can’t afford downtime due to what we’re hauling, and the price of our trailers. They do their best to make sure we get service when we need it.”

Kenworth’s quality products, combined with excellent dealer support from dealers such as Custom Truck Sales, contributed to Kenworth receiving the 2009 J.D. Power and Associates award for “Highest in Customer Satisfaction for Heavy Duty Dealer Service.”

According to Armitage, Wheelers Transport normally keeps its Kenworths until they hit 1.2 million kilometers. “They give us a good long life,” he said. “And, we never have a problem selling them – they always have very good resale value. It’s just another reason the T800 is our truck of choice.”

ATA Truck Tonnage Index Increased 0.9 Percent in April

Monday, May 31st, 2010

ARLINGTON, VA — The American Trucking Associations’ advance seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased for the sixth time in the last seven months, gaining another 0.9 percent in April. This followed a 0.4 percent increase in March. The latest improvement put the SA index at 110.2 (2000= 100), which is the highest level since September 2008. Over the last seven months, the tonnage index grew a total of 6.5 percent.

The not seasonally adjusted index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by the fleets before any seasonal adjustment, equaled 111.3 in April, down 4.4 percent from the previous month.

Compared with April 2009, SA tonnage surged 9.4 percent, which was the fifth consecutive year-over-year gain and the largest increase since January 2005. Year-to-date, tonnage is up 6 percent compared with the same period in 2009.

ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said that the latest tonnage reading fits with a sustained economic recovery. “Truck tonnage volumes continue to improve at a solid, yet sustainable, rate. Tonnage is being boosted by robust manufacturing output and stronger retail sales.” Costello also reiterated a statement from last month’s release, saying: “For most fleets, freight volumes feel better than reported tonnage because the supply situation, particularly in the truckload sector, is turning quickly.”
