LAND O’ LAKES, Fla.,– The last thing any homeowner wants to do is need Earth Tech. But if they do, they will be glad they called.Earth Tech is the leading soil stabilization firm in Florida, where much of the state has sandy soils laying on top of porous limestone. “Think of Swiss cheese,” said Ron Broadrick, CEO of the Land O’ Lakes, Fla.-based company, which he founded with his father, Lewis, in 1991. “That’s what limestone can eventually look like. Over time, mildly acidic water develops passageways and cavities in limestone allowing soil particles to flow with water, causing sinkhole conditions.”
When a homeowner or business notices settling and cracking in their structure, or sees sinkholes developing, a call is made to a geo-technical engineer who investigates and uses imaging equipment to analyze the problem. “More often than not, it’s a limestone problem and we get called in to stabilize the bedrock.”
Using a fleet of 20 trucks, including nine new Kenworth T470s equipped with 10-1/2- yard McNeilus mixers, Earth Tech uses a special grout formula from its own batch plant that is pumped into the bedrock. “For a typical house, we’ll drill 25 to 30 holes around the house at various angles, installing a steel casing down to rock on average 80 feet to hit the limestone. We then begin pumping in the grout to seal the top of the limestone as the steel casing is withdrawn. The process repeats itself in each hole until the sinkhole condition is stabilized.”
According to Broadrick, Earth Tech has stabilized more than 3,000 job sites – big and small. “We continue to grow, much in part thanks to our quality reputation. I’m actively involved in each aspect of business, as is my father. And we have a customer care representative working with each of our clients to ensure projects go smoothly. But we not only talk the talk, we showcase quality in every aspect of our business. Our feeling is that if you invest in the best people and the most innovative equipment, you can assure your customers of top performance and on-time delivery. Our new Kenworth T470s help us fulfill our goals.”
Working with Rick Ward of Kenworth of Central Florida, the Kenworth T470 was recommended due to the flat terrain and job requirements for the vehicle. “We spec’d the T470s with a Cummins ISL engine rated at 365 hp with 1,250 ft-lbs of torque and 5.38 gear ratio. Allison automatics complete the package. With these specs, Earth Tech has the pulling power and the gradeability to haul 10 yards of grout. The Kenworth T470 was the perfect fit for their application,” said Ward.
The T470 has a gross vehicle rating (GVW) ranging from a heavy Class 7 vehicle at 33,000 lbs. up to a light Class 8 truck at 68,000 lbs. The vehicle offers full parent rail extensions, delivering maximum resistance to bending moment (RBM) from one end of the rail to the other. Front axles are rated from 12,000 to 22,000 lbs., single rear axles from 21,000 to 26,000 lbs., and tandem rear axles from 40,000 to 46,000 lbs. A full range of manual and automatic transmissions are offered.
“Rick and Kenworth of Central Florida did a great job of working with us to come up with the right truck for our operation,” said Broadrick. “We’re specialists in soil stabilization – not so much in truck technology. They took the time to understand our business and they realize how valuable vehicle reliability and dealer support is to our business. We have set schedules with our customers and specialized equipment, so we need to be able to trust the dealership and its service department with our business. And we do.”
Kenworth’s quality products, combined with excellent dealer support from dealers such as Kenworth of Central Florida, contributed to Kenworth receiving the 2009 J.D. Power and Associates award for “Highest in Customer Satisfaction for Heavy Duty Dealer Service.”* In operation since February, the T470s are getting grins of satisfaction from Earth Tech drivers. “They love ’em,” said Broadrick. “Who wouldn’t?”
