LEHIGH VALLEY, PA – Space Shuttle Blake began as one teacher’s passion more than two decades ago. This weekend, the bus-size model space shuttle will participate in the 2010 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. Mack Trucks, Inc. has been part of the story all along.
In the early 1980s, NASA’s space shuttle program was big news. Bob Boehmer, a teacher at Schnecksville Elementary school just outside of Allentown, Pennsylvania, was convinced he could find an exciting way to teach students about space exploration. With donations of equipment, computers and an old military transport bus, Bob was ready to create a mobile classroom to bring space exploration to students throughout the Parkland School District.
Looking for someone to paint the bus, Bob contacted Mack. His excitement about bringing space exploration to kids was contagious. Very quickly, several Mack employees came up with the idea of not just painting the bus, but re-building and re-configuring it into a drivable model of the shuttle itself. Mack volunteers spent nights, weekends and holidays designing and building what would become the Space Shuttle Blake. In the end, Mack employees – and some retirees – dedicated more than 35,000 hours of their personal time to the effort. Innovations they incorporated include:
- Hydraulically controlled wings and tail (wings fold up, tail folds down) to make the vehicle drivable on public roads
- Hydraulically controlled ramp for handicapped access
- Removable fuel tank for safety indoors
- Remote electrical supply for use outdoors
The project took nearly seven years to complete, eventually gaining the attention of NASA officials. The Blake’s mission as well as its name struck a chord. A 5th grader at Schnecksville Elementary had discovered that during the age of ocean exploration in the 1700’s, a sailing ship called “Challenger” was destroyed, and its mission continued by another ship named “Blake.” The Space Shuttle Challenger and its crew, which included teacher Christa McAuliffe, were lost in 1986. The Space Shuttle Blake carries on the mission of space science-related education inspired by Mrs. McAuliffe and her crewmates, using flight simulators, robotics, interactive computer labs and telecommunications capable of conversing with the actual shuttle as it orbits the earth.
In 1995, Mack supplied a truck to transport the Blake from the Allentown area to Washington D.C. for a commissioning ceremony on Capitol Hill. With no problem covering shorter distances on its own, the Blake has since provided hands-on learning about space exploration and technology to more than 60,000 children throughout the Lehigh Valley.
Today, the Space Shuttle Blake is once again heading to Washington, and once again, it is being hauled by a Mack.
The Blake has been invited to take part in the 2010 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington D.C. on Monday, May 31st. Continuing its support of the project, Mack arranged for one of its MACK® Pinnacle™ model trucks, currently serving as the centerpiece of the American Trucking Associations’ Share the Road highway safety program , to deliver the shuttle to D.C. for the parade.
“The Mack-sponsored Share the Road program uses professional truck drivers, all with millions of miles of accident-free driving, to teach folks how to safely drive around large trucks,” said Mack spokesman John Walsh. “Education is also at the heart of the Blake’s mission. It carries a lot of Mack Bulldog spirit wherever it goes. Bringing the Blake together with Share the Road puts it in very good hands for this journey.”
“Mack employees built the Space Shuttle Blake. A Mack truck brought the Blake to Washington for its commissioning ceremony 15 years ago. It is only fitting that it should be a Mack delivering the Blake back to Washington to participate in this important, national event,” said Boehmer, who continues to teach at Schnecksville Elementary.
Students, teachers and parents gathered at Schnecksville Elementary today to send-off the Blake. Joining Walsh from Mack was Glenn Hinderliter, one of the employee volunteers who turned an old bus into an invaluable educational tool.
“The Blake project really grabbed our imagination all those years ago,” said Hinderliter. “The Mack employees knew we could use our skills to create something amazing for the kids and schools in our area. It’s exciting to know that all those nights and weekends working on it have had such a huge impact.”
Later this year, Mack and ATA’s Share the Road will again partner to bring the Space Shuttle Blake to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. NASA has invited the Blake to be on the tarmac at Kennedy Space Center to welcome the Shuttle Discovery home from its final mission – and to commemorate the end of the space shuttle program.
