Quigley Introduces New Lifted Independent Front Suspension System

Friday, July 30th, 2010

USA - Since Quigley Motor Co., Inc. (Manchester, PA) retired its solid axle 4×4 GM products, the company has been developing, designing and testing a new product to take its place. Quigley now introduces the LIFS (Lifted Independent Front Suspension) 4×4 system. Compared to the standard IFS 4×4 system, the LIFS will incorporate a 3.0″ lifted suspension system. This will enable off-road trailblazers to clear rocks and other tall or steep objects while maintaining the smooth, comfortable ride of the rugged, dependable IFS 4×4 system.

The LIFS will be sold as optional equipment in conjunction with the standard IFS 4×4 system. LIFS is available for 2010 and newer GM models only. There will be an additional installation cost on top of the price of the required IFS 4×4 system.

Astoria Industries of Iowa and Amtech LLC Enter Manufacturing Agreement

Friday, July 30th, 2010

USA - Amtech LLC (Wapato, WA), a Blackford Capital portfolio company and diverse manufacturer of composite-based products and parts, announced a joint manufacturing agreement with Astoria Industries (Osceola, IA).

Amtech has been recognized as one of the fastest growing and most innovative small businesses in Washington. The company manufactures custom parts and assemblies in the transportation, recreational vehicle, cooling tower, wind energy components and construction equipment markets. Additionally, Amtech has several lines of proprietary products, including the Mobile Advantage Meal Delivery Vehicles, Military Helmet Hardtop Shelters, Trailer Tops and Short Cargo Bed Covers.

Astoria Industries has two facilities in Iowa, totaling more than 200,000 square feet, which have space available to support the new Midwest production that Amtech is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2010.

Bob Wolf, owner and president of Astoria, said: “The partnering with Amtech has presented itself at a time when our Osceola and Chariton facilities can support Amtech in the Midwest as well as create benefits for our customers by the sharing of technologies that our companies will bring to the relationship. It will be business as usual for Astoria Industries and that they will continue manufacturing their proprietary product line of composite service truck and utility bodies from the Osceola facility and that Astoria’s production and customers will not be affected by the additional work Amtech will bring into the Astoria plants.”

Doug Christie, president and CEO of Amtech, said: “This manufacturing alliance will allow us to expand our Midwest presence and utilize some excess capacity in the Astoria Industries facilities. The Amtech sales group has been working in the Midwest region over the past several months and has opportunities which are closing in the near future and have more to come. Having the availability of a Midwest location that is set up, operating and ready to accept new work is a win-win for the needs of both Amtech and Astoria Industries. We look at the manufacturing marriage of our two companies as the first step toward a strategic business relationship for the future.”

Renault Trucks At The Hanover Motor Show: Cutting Consumption And Promoting Alternative Energies

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Germany - During the International Motor Show (IAA) taking place in Hanover from 23 to 30 September, Renault Trucks will be particularly highlighting two of its most important themes: the savings in energy achieved using Optifuel Solutions, plus the alternatives to the use of all-diesel energy, now known as “Clean Tech”. This 2010 edition will also be an opportunity to present full details of the centralised Start&Drive contracts recently launched on the German market. The Renault Trucks press conference will be held on Wednesday 22 September from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. on the manufacturer’s stand (Hall 17-A 21).

Renault Trucks will be exhibiting all the solutions that make it a world leader for fuel savings at the Hanover 2010 edition:

  • Premium Optifuel. Already optimised as far as consumption is concerned, the Premium Long Distance will be shown at Hanover in its Premium Optifuel version, the only solution of its kind on the market which combines a truck with driving instruction. Certified by an independent laboratory, the TÜV, this offer can deliver fuel savings of 6.4%.
  • Master by Renault Trucks. In both its panel van and chassis cab versions, the new Master can reduce consumption by around 7% compared with its previous version.
  • Optifuel Solutions is a comprehensive product and service offering which helps companies save fuel and diminish the proportion of their long-term operating costs spent on “consumption”. These consist of both technical elements and services.

- Optifuel Technology which incorporates the best of Renault Trucks’ technology related to fuel savings, such as:
* SCR
* The Optidriver+ or Optitronic robotised gearbox
* the automatic engine cut-out
* the new Euro V DXi 11 and DXi 13 engines
* OptiTrack is being given its world premiere presentation in Hanover. Based on a “conventional” Premium

Lander 4×2, this version offers temporary 4×4 transmission - together with all its advantages - only when it is really needed, avoiding the disadvantages of all-wheel drive which reduces payload and increases consumption.

With OptiTrack, Renault Trucks offers a solution providing 490 kg of additional payload while at the same time reducing consumption (compared with a conventional 4×4) by up to 10%.

The OptiTrack solution also includes a number of world firsts: total hydraulic system compatibility with the Optidriver+ robotised gearbox and all forms of power takeoff, plus activation of the OptiTrack function by simply pressing a button on the dashboard, when rolling or stationary. All of which are additional assets to further enhance the Renault Premium Lander’s intrinsic qualities.
* accessories dedicated to reducing fuel consumption such as side or roof deflectors that can be easily adjusted, without tools
* Renault Trucks certified Approved Parts, designed for maximum efficiency and minimum consumption. For example, injection system components (injector, processing units, sensors, etc.) or the air and oil filters, prevent excess consumption when replacements are Approved Parts certified.

- Optifuel Programme This comprehensive programme of services gives operators all the tools and expertise they need to make immediate and sustainable fuel savings. It consists of instruction in rational driving (Optifuel Training), measurement software (Optifuel Infomax) and access to an exclusive Internet site (the Club Optifuel Programme). Optifuel Programme is now the most cost-efficient solution on the market for generating sustainable fuel savings.

Optifuel Programme has been developed for the Long Distance, Construction and Distribution ranges. It is designed for companies of all sizes operating in all fields. Renault Trucks makes this offer available throughout Europe. There are now 300 companies - representing a total of 14,000 drivers - which have chosen the Optifuel Programme in Europe and therefore enjoy its distinctive advantages: a reduction in consumption of up to 15% for an entire fleet.

While already leading the field in terms of fuel savings, Renault Trucks also aims to be in the forefront of developing vehicles using alternative energies. Visitors to the show will be able to get acquainted with these new propulsion modes on the Renault Trucks stand by viewing the Maxity Electric and the Renault Premium Distribution Hybrys Tech.

A comprehensive range of such vehicles is now available:

Maxity Electric. Electrical energy is particularly suited to applications in urban environments with low daily kilometrage. Developed in partnership with PVI and EDF, Maxity Electric is now in its second phase of development and has just been fitted with a new gearbox. Equipped with an asynchronous electric motor, Maxity Electric has a maximum speed of 90 kph and its new generation lithium-ion batteries give it an operating range of 100 km. The first model was delivered to Parisian brewery Tafanel in May 2010. Other customers have already placed orders and will receive their vehicles between now and the end of the year.

Premium Distribution Hybrys Tech. A pioneer in the experimental application of this technology in Europe, Renault Trucks has been testing an RCV version of its Premium Distribution Hybrys Tech under actual operating conditions in the streets of the Greater Lyon area since 2009. This first test version has enabled Renault Trucks engineers to make significant improvements to the “second generation” hybrid vehicle currently undergoing operational tests with Coca-Cola Enterprises Belgium in Brussels and with the Colas construction company in Lyon.

The Clean Tech label. To raise awareness of these vehicles using alternative propulsion modes, Renault Trucks is now applying the Clean Tech label, with a specific logo featured on the bodywork, to all its hybrid, electric and NGV vehicles. The manufacturer has also started issuing labels to its repairer network so that customers can be confident of obtaining the quality of service required by these new technologies, particularly in terms of skills, personnel training and the use of specific tools.

This exhibition will also be an opportunity to make a detailed presentation of Start&Drive, the centralised servicing and repair contract offer recently launched in Germany. In the event of a breakdown occurring anywhere in Europe, the customer can receive assistance throughout the Renault Trucks network. Start&Drive enables customers to keep servicing budgets under control, as well as giving them the assurance that they will remain operational at all times. It also allows the Renault Trucks network to engage in genuinely proactive maintenance management, leaving customers free to focus on their mission and only on their mission.

Truck Racing: Four Races And Four Top Three Finishes For The Renault Trucks - Mkr Technology Team

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Germany - At the Germany grand prix in Nürburgring, the heat was not coming from the sky but from the track. More exactly from the stands, where over 200,000 truck racing fans had gathered from all over Germany. And sometimes from further afield still… With an audience already won over by this particular brand of motor sport, Markus Oestreich, the German MKR Technology - Renault Trucks team driver, was clearly intent on being the showman of the event. Having pulled out further to an assistance air problem during the first race of the weekend, Markus Oestreich made a spectacular comeback in the second.

This allowed him to finish in an honourable fifth place after leaving last on the grid! This was a great performance on home turf, and greeted with understandable acclaim from his fellow countrymen. The German driver was once again in the thick of the crowd’s excitement. Whilst he finished second in the first race on Sunday, he brought the crowds to their feet by coming over the finish line of the second race first. With 94 points accumulated since the beginning of the season, Markus Oestreich holds onto his fifth place in the European championship.

The osmosis between the German driver and his public should not let us forget the fabulous results of Markus Bösiger, the Swiss drive in the team. He managed to get onto the podium twice with two 3rd place finishes. On Sunday, he finished 5th and then 6th. In spite of that, with an 11-point lead over the 3rd place driver, he reinforced his 2nd place with a cumulative 153 points since the beginning of the championships. In the general team rankings, the MKR Technology - Renault Trucks team strengthened further its 2nd place with 214 points.

nother good result of the weekend was Team 14’s success with their French driver, Anthony Janiec. On Saturday, he came 8th in the first race after a head-to-head with a 9th place driver in what was not an easy race for him. Because of the rule on reverse starting order for the first 8 finishers, he was in pole position in the second race. And he managed to hold onto top spot for three laps of the circuit. Also of note was the excellent performance of the young French driver who finished the second race on Sunday in 5th place, one of his very best performances yet. After this fourth grand prix, Anthony Janiec has 44 points, which leaves him in 9th position.

Reputed for its excitable crowd and quality entertainment, the Nürburgring grand prix was true to its reputation. The commercial vehicle manufacturer’s German subsidiary stand was fully involved in the fun and games. On the customer side, Renault Trucks Germany invited hundreds of customers to attend the event on a terrace near the track. For the fans, the German subsidiary organised two autograph signing sessions with its drivers on its stand, on Saturday and Sunday. A glance at the clapometer would suggest that the German driver, Markus Oestreich, was the big success of the weekend.

Ashok Leyland Q1 Turnover at Rs. 2,348 crores, up 156%

Friday, July 30th, 2010

India: Ashok Leyland, the Hinduja Group flagship, has registered a 156% increase in turnover to Rs. 2,347.98 crores (Rs. 918.07 crores) in the quarter ended June 30, 2010. Net Profit at Rs. 122.64 crores was up 15 times against Rs. 7.77 crores in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

Sale of vehicles for the quarter was 21,400 numbers (7,693 nos.) with domestic volume at 19,460 nos. (6,790 nos) and international operations contributing 1,940 nos. (903 nos).

Compared to the I Qtr of the last fiscal, the numbers make for very impressive reading with the Company having registered one of its best I Qtr performances, in terms of operating margins and volumes. Profit from operations before other income, financial expenses and exceptional items rose by 8 times at Rs. 173.93 crores (loss of Rs. 25.71 crores) signifying the benefits of larger volumes besides the Company’s ability to effectively contain the increase in raw material prices. Profit before financial expenses and exceptional item increased over 5 times at Rs. 178.66 crores (Rs. 29.29 crores).

Financial expenses at Rs. 31.62 crores (Rs. 25.80 crores) have increased reflecting the impact of fresh loans raised during second half of last fiscal and also due to lower interest capitalization consequent to commissioning of Pantnagar plant in Mar ‘10. Depreciation at Rs. 61.47 crores (Rs. 43.50 crores) is also higher this fiscal consequent to the commissioning of the Pantnagar plant.

“Our I Qtr numbers reflect the momentum that we picked up in IV Qtr of the last fiscal which is reflected in the fact that we have gained market share touching 27%,” said Mr. R. Seshasayee, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland. “If freight demand continues to be robust, this trend should continue. However, there are some growth dampeners lurking in the form of supply chain constraints, rising interest rates, fuel and raw material prices,” he cautioned.

“Going forward, we envisage pre-buying prior to the introduction of the BS III emission norms across the country in October,” added Mr. Seshasayee, hinting that his earlier estimate of an industry growth of above 15% was still holding good.
