Mitsubishi Fuso Significantly Increases Sales in Indonesia, Showcasing Full Suite of Products At 18th Indonesia International Motor Show

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Kawasaki - Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC), one of Asia’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, announced that its January-to-May sales in Indonesia more than doubled over the same period in 2009, achieving a sales record for the first five months of the year. Amidst the positive market conditions, market leader Mitsubishi Fuso is now participating in the 18th Indonesia International Motor Show 2010 with an exhibit including current products and showcasing the new FV heavy-duty truck and an advanced generation FN medium-duty truck.

“Mitsubishi Fuso continues to achieve very strong sales in Indonesia, reflecting the overall positive momentum in international markets,” said Mr. Kai-Uwe Seidenfuss, MFTBC Vice President of Sales and Service International. “As Mitsubishi Fuso’s largest export market and the largest truck market overall in Southeast Asia, Indonesia plays a key role in the success of our international business.”

Mr. Seidenfuss outlined, “Mitsubishi Fuso’s commitment to further strengthen the Indonesia business is highlighted in the brand’s presence at Indonesia Motor Show, which shows the robust products and outstanding services we can deliver to our customers, together with our local partners.”

Record Sales in First Five Months
Through the five months in 2010, Indonesia sales increased 115% to 20,832 units (Jan.-May 2009 = 9,708 units, Jan.-May 2008 = 17,796 units). This represents the highest ever sales over such an interval, exceeding the same pre-economic-crisis period in 2008.

Mitsubishi Fuso at the Indonesia International Motor Show 2010
As excellent sales continue into the second half of the year, Mitsubishi Fuso is participating in the Indonesia International Motor Show starting today and running through August 1 at the Jakarta International Expo. On display are a suite of vehicles that show Mitsubishi Fuso’s ability to deliver reliable and efficient vehicle solutions to Indonesia customers.

The company’s exhibit is based on three current models in the market: the Colt Diesel van, Colt Diesel dump truck and Colt Diesel light-duty bus. A classic Colt Diesel is also exhibited, representing the brand’s historic development and success in the Indonesia market in earlier times.

Showcasing FV Heavy-duty Truck and Advanced FN Medium-Duty Truck
Mitsubishi Fuso is also showcasing two additional new products at the Show: the FV heavy-duty tractor head and an advanced generation FN medium-duty truck.

The FV heavy-duty truck marks the upper end of Fuso’s line-up and opens up the potential to offer an even broader and more comprehensive truck line in Indonesia, extending from 5 tons up to 27.6 tons gross vehicle weight (gvw), and to serve a wider range of business and industry.

The advanced generation FN medium-duty truck on display incorporates additional modern advances in safety, reliability and efficiency, showing the further possibilities Mitsubishi Fuso can deliver.

Mr. Seidenfuss explained, “We are confident to find major demand for the flagship FV heavy-duty truck with its ability to tap into the heavier segment of the market. The advanced generation FN medium-duty truck shows a view to advanced technology for Indonesia, building on and adding to the successful products already in the market.

“The exhibit of these two vehicles demonstrates further ways to enhance our product line in Indonesia, which is based on the iconic Colt Diesel Canter and complemented by the rest of the Fuso line-up.”

Daimler targets Group EBIT of €6 billion in full-year 2010

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Stuttgart - Recovering automotive markets around the world, strong growth in major car and commercial-vehicle markets, an attractive product portfolio and the implementation of efficiency improvements had a very positive effect on Daimler AG (stock-exchange symbol DAI) in the second quarter of 2010.

“Our strategy is paying off: We have a very dynamic development of unit sales and revenue in all divisions. After what was already a very good first quarter, we achieved excellent results in the second quarter,” stated Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. Mercedes-Benz Cars and Daimler Trucks in particular posted significant improvements in their operating profit.

Zetsche remains confident for the full year: “We anticipate significant revenue growth in 2010 and we are targeting EBIT from the ongoing business of €6 billion.”

The positive development of EBIT in the second quarter led to a significant improvement in net profit to €1,312 million (Q2 2009: net loss of €1,062 million). Earnings per share amounted to €1.18 (Q2 2009: loss per share of €0.99).

Unit sales up by 27% in the second quarter

In the second quarter of 2010, Daimler sold 496,500 cars and commercial vehicles worldwide, surpassing the prior-year volume by 27%.

The Daimler Group’s second-quarter revenue increased significantly from €19.6 billion in 2009 to €25.1 billion this year (+28%); adjusted for exchange-rate effects, revenue grew by 21%.

The free cash flow of the industrial business was positive and increased substantially by €1.1 billion to €2.5 billion.

At the end of the second quarter of 2010, Daimler employed 257,658 people worldwide (June 30, 2009: 257,427). Of that total, 163,507 were employed in Germany (June 30, 2009: 162,818). Due to the current order situation and the revival of demand around the world, short-time work was terminated as of June 30, 2010, with just a few small exceptions.

Details of the divisions in the second quarter

The Mercedes-Benz Cars division increased its unit sales by 19% to 342,500 vehicles. For the Mercedes-Benz brand, this was the strongest second quarter ever; its unit sales rose by 24% to 314,400 vehicles. For lifecycle reasons, sales of the smart fortwo decreased to 27,100 units (Q2 2009: 33,500). Mercedes-Benz Cars’ revenue increased by 33% to €14.0 billion. EBIT rose by €1.7 billion to €1,376 million. The division’s return on sales was 9.8% (Q2 2009: minus 3.2%).

The very positive earnings trend was primarily the result of increased vehicle shipments, especially in China, as well as an improved product mix. The substantial improvement in profitability was also caused by better pricing, efficiency enhancements and slightly positive exchange-rate effects.

Daimler Trucks increased its unit sales by 55% to 83,800 vehicles. All of the division’s major markets contributed to this positive development, in particular Indonesia (+130%), the United States (+44%), Brazil (+50%) and Europe (+39%). Revenue of €5.9 billion was also well above the prior-year level (Q2 2009: €4.2 billion). The division also achieved a significant improvement in its operating performance, with EBIT of €300 million (Q2 2009: minus €508 million) and a return on sales of 5.1% (Q2 2009: minus 12.0%).

The key factor for the earnings trend was the good development of unit sales. There were other positive effects from the measures taken to reduce costs, in particular from the repositioning of the subsidiaries Daimler Trucks North America and Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation. The ongoing implementation of those programs reduced second-quarter EBIT by €14 million (Q2 2009: €217 million).

Unit sales by Mercedes-Benz Vans increased by 42% to 59,400 vehicles. Second-quarter revenue of €2.0 billion was also well above last year’s level (Q2 2009: €1.5 billion). EBIT amounted to €127 million (Q2 2009: minus €10 million) and the return on sales improved to 6.4% (Q2 2009: minus 0.7%). The division’s earnings improvement was primarily the result of a strong increase in unit sales compared to the second quarter of last year. Negative exchange-rate effects were more than offset by sustained efficiency gains.

Daimler Buses sold a total of 10,800 buses and chassis worldwide (Q2 2009: 8,300). Revenue of €1.2 billion was higher than in the prior-year quarter (€1.1 billion). EBIT also increased, to €79 million compared to €49 million in the second quarter of last year. The return on sales was 6.6% (Q2 2009: 4.4%). The main factors behind this earnings development were positive exchange-rate effects and higher revenue resulting from increased chassis shipments in Latin America.

The contract volume of Daimler Financial Services increased to €63.8 billion at the end of the second quarter, which is 9% higher than at the end of 2009. Adjusted for exchange-rate effects, the division’s portfolio remained stable. New business amounted to €7.9 billion (Q2 2009: €6.5 billion). EBIT improved substantially to €171 million (Q2 2009: €79 million).

The earnings increase was mainly caused by lower risk expenses and higher interest margins. In addition, gains were realized in connection with the sale of non-automotive assets (€26 million). Expenses of €78 million were incurred for the repositioning of business activities in Germany.

The reconciliation of the divisions’ EBIT to Group EBIT reflects Daimler’s proportionate share in the results of its equity-method investment in EADS, other gains or losses at the corporate level, and the effects on earnings of eliminating internal transactions between the divisions.

Hino Takes The Danger Out Of Transport

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Australia - A Sydney-based transport company relies on the strength and dependability of Hino trucks to deliver food and dangerous goods throughout New South Wales.

Chemsafe Logistics employs a fleet of 33 Hino trucks, ranging from a small Dutro 300 Series with a van body through to a heavy-duty 700 Series SS prime mover, and many models in between.

Company founder Shane Black said one of the reasons for using Hino trucks almost exclusively was that they cover the full range of sizes and requirements.

“I’ve had other businesses and used other trucks, but I really got to like Hinos, so it was natural to go with Hino when I started this business nearly seven years ago,” Mr Black said.

“We’ve had no issues with them, the service back-up has been very good and we just have no problems with Hino. It has been very cost-effective for us.

“It’s also good for the drivers because they can jump into any model in the range and they are familiar with the surroundings and controls, which is very convenient.”

Mr Black started Chemsafe Logistics in 2004 with a single Hino truck, which remains a regular part of the fleet.

The company has added an average of five trucks a year to its fleet, about half of which have been bought through Chemsafe by owner-drivers.

Chemsafe recently added to its fleet a 190kW six-speed Hino GD 1227 500 Series with a 12-tonne GVM and a similarly-powered FG 1527 with a nine-speed transmission and a 15-tonne GVM.

Chemsafe also collects and stores dangerous goods and chemicals at its 8500m2 warehouse at Chester Hill in Sydney’s south-west, in this way offering its customers a full logistics service.

Food distribution is handled by a subsidiary called Foodsafe, which now accounts for about 30 per cent of Chemsafe’s business.

Soon after the company started, Chemsafe designed and developed an innovative Dangerous Goods Segregation Device (DGSD) that enables various classes of dangerous goods to be transported on the same vehicle.

Mr Black said these devices are successfully operating on all Chemsafe trucks, streamlining logistics, lowering costs and increasing service levels for the company’s customers.

“We have specialised in dangerous goods since we started – and the field has been very good for us,” said Mr Black.

“New laws regarding their handling and storage have made it harder to get into the business, and many of the bigger companies are getting out because it is so specialised now.”
