First Owner-Operator To Purchase New Aerodynamic Kenworth T700 Enjoying the Ride

Monday, August 30th, 2010

BATTLE LAKE, Minn. – It’s not often that you’ll hear a truck dealer say “wait.” But, that’s just what Lavel Larson, an owner-operator from Battle Lake, Minn., heard when he visited his dealer to buy a new truck.

Larson, who is leased to Valley Express and makes runs to California and the West Coast, was operating a Kenworth T2000 with close to a million miles under the hood. “It was time for a trade-in,” Larson said. “I bought the T2000 back in 2003 and really liked the extra space it offered, and was happy with the performance and fuel economy. I was ready to buy another.”

Larson2“As a salesman, you certainly want to get a truck sale, but I knew if Lavel waited for the new Kenworth T700 to come out, he’d be more than happy. He’d be ecstatic,” said Joel Hought, a salesman with Wallwork Kenworth – Fargo.

“Joel said the new Kenworth T700 offered more room, better amenities and new technology. What he told me and showed me, sold me,” said Larson. “But he didn’t need to sell me on durability and reliability of the T700 – with all the years driving a Kenworth, I knew what I was getting – a quality vehicle.”

Thus, Larson became the first owner-operator to buy the aerodynamic Kenworth T700. According to Larson, things have gone smoothly and the transition to a new 2010 engine – a 500-hp Cummins ISX15 driven through an automated transmission – has been a non-issue as well. “I welcome new technology and had no qualms about buying a truck with the new engine,” Larson said. “Having to use DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) isn’t a big deal either.”

Thus far, fuel mileage is exceeding that of his previous truck, “and it will only get better through the break-in period,” Larson said. “And the room, quietness and storage in the T700 are terrific. It was good in my last truck, but this is even better.”

ATA Truck Tonnage Index Rose 1.5 Percent in July

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

ARLINGTON, VA — The American Trucking Associations’ advance seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 1.5 percent in July, although June’s reduction was revised from 1.4 percent to 1.6 percent. The latest improvement raised the SA index from 108.3 (2000=100) in June to 110 in July.

The not seasonally adjusted index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by the fleets before any seasonal adjustment, equaled 109.9 in July, down 5 percent from the previous month.

Compared with July 2009, SA tonnage climbed 7.4 percent, which matched June’s increase and was the eighth consecutive year-over-year gain. Year-to-date, tonnage is up 6.7 percent compared with the same period in 2009.

ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said that July’s data didn’t change his outlook for subdued tonnage growth in the months ahead, stating, “The economy is slowing and truck freight tonnage has essentially gone sideways since April 2010.” Nevertheless, Costello believes that tonnage will post moderate gains, on average, for the second half of the year. “After accounting for the reduction in supply over the last few years, even small gains in tonnage will have a larger impact on the industry than in past.”

Note on the impact of trucking company failures on the index: Each month, ATA asks its membership the amount of tonnage each carrier hauled, including all types of freight. The indexes are calculated based on those responses. The sample includes an array of trucking companies, ranging from small fleets to multi-billion dollar carriers. When a company in the sample fails, we include its final month of operation and zero it out for the following month, with the assumption that the remaining carriers pick up that freight. As a result, it is close to a net wash and does not end up in a false increase. Nevertheless, some carriers are picking up freight from failures, and it may have boosted the index. Due to our correction mentioned above, however, it should be limited.

Trucking serves as a barometer of the U.S. economy, representing 68 percent of tonnage carried by all modes of domestic freight transportation, including manufactured and retail goods. Trucks hauled 8.8 billion tons of freight in 2009. Motor carriers collected $544.4 billion, or 81.9 percent of total revenue earned by all transport modes.

Fuel Economy Rules Submitted for Review

Friday, August 27th, 2010

U.S. :The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have sent their proposed fuel economy and emissions standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks to the White House for review by the Office of Management and Budget.

Details of the proposal were not available.

In May, President Obama ordered the two agencies to cooperate on new rules that may establish fuel economy standards and cut carbon emissions for commercial trucks.

OMB typically takes about 90 days to review rules, so details on the proposal likely will be made public before the end of the year.

PPI, Leading Economic Index Inch Up

Friday, August 27th, 2010

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods inched up 0.2 percent in July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This marked the first month-to-month gain since March, following a 0.5 percent drop in June and a 0.3 percent slip in May.

The PPI measures changes in prices received by producers of goods and services, such as motor carriers, according to Bob Costello, chief economist of the American Trucking Associations. In his Weekly Economic Recap, Costello said food prices were also up for the first time since March, rising 0.7 percent.

“Despite July’s increase, pipeline inflation is still subdued,” Costello said. “Compared with a year earlier, the PPI was up 4.1 percent, while the core PPI rose only 1.5 percent.”

Core PPI does not include volatile food and energy prices, he said.

For the trucking industry, PPIs rose over last year, but at a slower rate than in June. Truckload PPI was up 1.8 percent from July 2009, after increasing more than 3 percent the previous two months, Costello said. Less-than-truckload PPI was up 0.1 percent year-over-year, down from June’s 1 percent increase.

Another economic indicator, the Leading Economic Index, also inched up this week, gaining 0.1 percent in July. This follows a 0.3 percent drop in June, Costello said.
