Major test reveals that CO2 emissions can be reduced by almost 15 per cent

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Two-thirds of Europe’s truck rigs are driving around with incorrect wheel alignment. Many also have the wrong tyre type and the wrong tyre pressure. Carbon dioxide emissions from these rigs would be able to be significantly reduced if these faults were rectified – in some cases by as much as 15 per cent. These findings were revealed in a large-scale test that tyre manufacturer Michelin carried out in partnership with Volvo Trucks.

“We know that wheel alignment, tyre type and tyre pressure all have a major impact on fuel consumption,” says Arne-Helge Andreassen, business area manager for tyres and wheel alignment at Volvo Trucks’ Aftermarket department.

Since fuel consumption is directly linked to carbon dioxide emissions, Volvo Trucks and tyre manufacture Michelin decided to produce statistical data on just how much wheel alignment, tyre pressure and rolling resistance affect fuel consumption and thus carbon dioxide emissions. In a two-week long test, a rig with optimal tyres, tyre pressures and wheel alignment was compared with a vehicle featuring different wheel alignments and tyre parameters.

Analysis of the test results reveals that there can be a difference of as much as 14.5 per cent in fuel consumption depending on how the wheels are aligned and equipped. Choice of tyre can cut consumption by as much as 11 per cent, correct tyre inflation brings a reduction of 1 per cent, while proper wheel alignment can cut fuel consumption by 2.5 per cent.

“There is a lack of awareness in the transport industry about the importance of checking tyres and wheel alignment, on both the truck and the trailer,” says Arne-Helge Andreassen. “At our dealers, we can help haulage companies check the entire rig and correct any problems. If everyone did this, it would have a significant impact on carbon dioxide emissions.”

2011 Ford F-150 All-New Powertrain Lineup Delivers Best-In-Class Capability

Monday, September 27th, 2010

DALLAS – The signature class-leading capability and durability of the Ford F-150 are enhanced for 2011 with projected class-leading fuel economy and performance. Ford F-Series, America’s best-selling truck for 33 years running, now comes equipped with an all-new powertrain lineup that will deliver best-in-class horsepower, torque and projected fuel-economy leadership.

“For the past 33 years, the Ford F-150 has stood alone as the truck people really rely on,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas. “The class-leading capability of the F-150, combined with the durability that defines ‘Built Ford Tough,’ has made it the No. 1 choice of full-size pickup buyers. Now for 2011, that class-leading towing and payload capability is enhanced even further with engines that deliver projected class-leading fuel economy, allowing our customers to be more productive by maximizing their workload and their fuel economy.”

Including the 3.5-liter EcoBoost, which will be available in early 2011, a total of four new powertrains are available in the 2011 F-150. Each new engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Ford is the first and only manufacturer to equip its entire full-size pickup truck lineup with fuel-saving six-speed automatic transmissions as standard

Another fuel saver is the addition of class-exclusive electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) to the 3.7-liter V6, 5.0-liter V8 and 3.5-liter EcoBoost powertrains. The EPAS system replaces a conventional hydraulic system, which runs continuously off the engine, with a system that draws power only when needed. Additionally, EPAS enables several other driver convenience technologies and provides better steering feel. Ford is the first manufacturer to widely offer EPAS on full-size pickup trucks.

ATA Applauds Obama Administration for Their Support of More Productive Truck Program

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Arlington, Va. – The American Trucking Associations (ATA) applauds the Obama Administration for their efforts to make permanent two pilot programs that grant more productive trucks access to Interstate Highways in Maine and Vermont.

“We greatly appreciate the President’s support for changes that will improve safety and economic productivity,” ATA President and CEO Bill Graves said. “Existing restrictions on truck weight limits constrain the trucking industry’s efforts to reduce crashes, help our customers to remain competitive in global markets and lower our carbon footprint.”

Class of roadway is a leading indicator in truck-involved fatal crashes and vehicle weight has not been shown to be a contributing crash factor. Allowing more productive trucks to use Interstates instead of forcing them to use more accident-prone secondary roads will improve safety. In 2009 the number of fatalities in truck-involved crashes reached a record low in a continuing trend that can be expected to accelerate if size and weight reform is accomplished. Safety would improve because truck miles traveled would grow more slowly, resulting in less crash exposure.

In addition to improved safety, operating more productive vehicles on Interstates allows companies to deliver goods while making fewer trips, resulting in less costly freight transportation and greater economic productivity. With U.S. freight tonnage expected to grow 25 percent by 2021, more productive trucks are needed to accommodate this increase. Truck is the dominant mode of transportation in the supply chain, hauling nearly 70 percent of freight tonnage in the U.S., and nearly 100 percent of consumer products.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identified the use of more productive trucks as an effective strategy to reduce vehicle emissions as part of its SmartWaySM Transport Partnership Program. Truck size and weight reform will increase fuel efficiency by helping reduce traffic congestion and because fewer trips are needed to deliver the same amount of freight.
