KIRKLAND, Wash. – Off the heels of a successful tour in the United States, Kenworth’s T700 and PACCAR MX Engine Tour continues to draw hundreds of truck operators in Canada as the tour winds its way from British Columbia to New Brunswick, with stops in between.

“I think customers realize that Kenworth has hit a home run with its T700 and the PACCAR MX engine,” said Ray Cotton, new and used truck sales manager for Inland Kenworth in Langley, B.C. “More than 100 customers came to our open house, and there was a good feeling in the air about both these new products. They’re a great one-two punch generating a lot of excitement. During the event, we even had an owner operator place an order for a T700 with PACCAR MX engine. Everyone likes all the headroom and interior amenities. Plus the aerodynamics, coupled with the fuel savings of the PACCAR MX, can mean lower operating costs for our customers.”

In Calgary, the tour was part of an open house celebrating the 40th anniversary of GreatWest Kenworth. “We had close to 300 customers on hand and we dovetailed the tour with a vendor fair and anniversary-celebration luncheon,” said Jeff Storwick, co-president of GreatWest Kenworth. “It was a great event, with great customers and a great new product lineup.”

While the Kenworth dealership’s main market is vocational trucks and oil field support vehicles, the new, T700 over-the-road tractor bolsters Kenworth’s lineup. “Along with the Kenworth T660, we feel we have the two best trucks out there for the over-the-road market. Even our construction customers wanted to look inside the T700. There is a big wow factor, especially when you step inside and see all the room. Plus the Kenworth NavPlus® system was a hit and we gave lots of demonstrations.”

At Edmonton Kenworth – Northside, close to 250 customers came out to view the new aerodynamic model and PACCAR MX engine. “Our market area is in an upswing and the T700 is really going to give us a push in the wide cab market,” said Vance Klepper, truck sales manager of Edmonton Kenworth – Northside. “That was reinforced by the positive reaction we received. All the interior space, stylish look and aerodynamic features on the new T700 impressed a lot of our key customers.”

Across the board at the three dealerships, the PACCAR MX engine is expected to be a big hit with customers. “We have one customer who’s had a lot of experience in early testing of the engine. He couldn’t stop raving about the engine’s performance,” said Cotton. “Our other customers took notice.”

“We have several of the PACCAR MX engines out working with customers and the comments have been all positive,” added Storwick. “Everyone – from our vocation to over-the-road customers are excited about the engine from a performance, quietness, and weight standpoint. It’s going to be big.”

MARATHON, Wis. – In many ways, Bruce Lang’s newest truck fits the profile of a heavy hauler pulling loads in the range of 250,000 pounds.

There’s big power – a 600-hp engine mated to an 18-speed transmission. The 20,000-pound front axle and 69,000-pound tridem drive axles, with 60-inch spacings and differential locks on all three axles, provide ample capacity. There’s a double frame and a four-speed auxiliary air-shifted transmission to reduce stress on the driveline when the truck is off the highway.

But in typical Bruce Lang fashion, attention to detail makes his ride – a Kenworth T800 – just that much better.

Success in the heavy haul business is about managing the details and Lang is a master of the minute. His company, B&K Trucking in Marathon, Wis., has 18 company tractors, the majority being Kenworth T800s and W900s purchased through Wisconsin Kenworth in Wausau, and as many as 35 owner-operators. The fleet serves customers across a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, construction, and wind energy.

Loads are getting longer and heavier, and in some cases more fragile, said Lang, speaking from the site of a wind turbine installation in eastern Colorado. A reliable, smooth ride is essential.

“Moving a big load is a process,” he explained. “We haul anywhere in the United States and Canada, so we have to be constantly on top of permitting, compliance, and route restrictions. We have to plan carefully and pay attention to detail starting long before we cinch up a strap.”

Spec’ing the right truck for the job, he said, is no different. “Having been involved with oversized and specialized freight for nearly 20 years, I’ve learned how to get the most out my spec,” Lang said. “I’m not going to tailor my business to fit the truck. The Kenworth T800 lets me tailor the truck to fit my business.”

One example: The choice of a wide hood. “A 600-horsepower engine gets hot pretty fast when you’re hauling heavy loads at low speed and don’t have a steady stream of air coming into the engine box,” Lang said.
