Daimler Trucks North America Leads Industry by Certifying Complete Vehicle Lineup GHG14 Compliant

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

881028 1648946 111 71 12A41Stuttgart / Portland, OR. - The American Daimler subsidiary Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as fully compliant with the new “Greenhouse Gas 2014” (GHG14) regulation for its complete product portfolio of model year 2013 long-distance haulage, medium duty, construction and municipal vehicles.

DTNA’s compliance has been achieved ahead of the mandate for certification by the EPA and the Department of Transportation’s Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) program to reduce heavy- and medium-duty truck greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which will go into effect starting with the 2013 models. Daimler has set its goal to take the leading role in regard to environmentally friendly, resource efficient and sustainable transport solutions in the entire NAFTA region.

Under the new GHG14 regulations, trucks and buses built in 2014 through 2018 are projected to reduce oil consumption by 530 million barrels and greenhouse gas emissions by 270 million metric tons.

The United States is facing great challenges in regard to greenhouse gas reduction and its dependence on foreign oil. Through its cooperation with the EPA and the NHTSA, DTNA wants to provide answers to these challenges,” said Martin Daum, president and CEO, DTNA. “Early compliance with GHG14 regulations underlines our strategic direction. We want to set the standard in fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

The regulation contributes to the improvement of energy security, increases fuel savings, and reduces GHG emissions. Moreover, the new GHG 14 standard provides regulatory certainty for manufacturers. To clarify: GHG 14 does not replace the EPA 10 emission standard (valid since 01/2010 – comparable to the Euro 6 standard) that is currently in effect in the NAFTA region because EPA 10 addresses and regulates the traditional pollutant issues (particles, nitrogen oxide).

Mercedes-Benz Trucks has a strong position in China: Intensified cooperation with the Chinese construction machinery manufacturer Zoomlion

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

888533 1664934 111 75 12A197Beijing – Within the framework of their partnership in China, Mercedes-Benz Trucks and the Chinese construction machinery manufacturer Zoomlion Heavy Industry are intensifying their cooperation. Last Saturday they signed a letter of intent (LoI) for the delivery of 2,500 Mercedes-Benz trucks. The letter of intent concerns heavy-duty Mercedes-Benz Actros 3341 and 4141 truck models.

The Chinese corporation will receive the vehicles later this year. The 2,500 Mercedes-Benz Actros vehicles will be manufactured at the truck plant in Wörth, where they will also be adapted to Zoomlion’s special applications for concrete pumps.

In 2011 Daimler sold almost 5,800 Mercedes-Benz trucks in China, making it the market leader among the European competitors in China’s import segment. As a result, China is now the world’s six-largest market for the sale of Mercedes-Benz trucks.

Premium trucks adapted to special applications are particularly needed for China’s rapidly growing construction sector. China is currently planning to invest around 7 trillion RMB (more than €800 billion) in building and expanding urban infrastructures between 2011 and 2015.

In a statement, Hubertus Troska, Head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks and the person responsible for Mercedes-Benz Trucks worldwide, underscored the importance of the new contract: “We are very delighted that our Chinese business partner chose Mercedes-Benz trucks for its challenging applications in the construction industry. This letter of intent deepens our partnership with Zoomlion.

Two Generations Of “Meilleurs Ouvriers De France” At Renault Trucks

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

This came about when, just a few years before retiring from Renault Trucks, Dominique became fascinated by Antonio’s graduation project. For he had imagined an off-road truck for 2030, 12 m long and 6 m high designed to carry hydrogen - a new “fuel” - to those parts of the planet which no longer have any source of water. He had the idea of entering this for the 24th edition of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France competition, which was open to two-person teams. This possibility appealed to Antonino Lo Ré, and so both of them signed up in the industrial modelling category.

The project consisted of producing a model from start to finish based on the concept truck designed by Antonino Lo Ré. For the purposes of the competition, the aim was to actually add to the difficulties involved and vary the techniques used. Working from his original design, Antonino Lo Ré first digitised the entire vehicle before individually creating 3-D models of each one of the 200 parts making it up. Then, these virtual parts were manufactured using different techniques - from the most modern, such as laser sintering using aluminium powder or three-dimensional printing, to the oldest, using gouges, riflers, templates and sanders to produce handmade models!

The choice of which technology to use was made according to the purpose of the part in question and the degree of resistance it should have. “For the suspension arms, we chose laser sintering which gives a great deal of rigidity. On the other hand, the wheels were made from rubber using a three-dimensional printer,” explains Dominique Pasinetti.

A real technological and physical challenge, the Meilleur Ouvrier de France competition is won on merit. For the jury will not accept the slightest defect. It judges not only the project’s difficulty and the techniques used, but also of course, the result. Down to the finest detail. Dominique Pasinetti recalls that, “One day, when I was supposed to do some drilling in an area that was hard to access, it took me four hours of work to make preparations for drilling a hole that only took about 30 seconds!” An attention to detail which certainly paid off. After 100 hours of work carried out in their spare time, the two Renault Trucks staffers reached their goal by becoming Meilleurs Ouvriers de France with an excellent score of 17.4/20.
